Today we're going to talk about her new novel Awakened, which was released July 1, 2010. I must say this book was a captivating page-turner! The story begins with Tamara's decision to pursue success after coming from a roller coaster relationship with Benjamin- a contractor for the government. She counsels with her cousin Richard, before she is suddenly met with an email that invites her to interview for the CIA. Puzzled that they contacted her a year after she applied, she accepts the invitation. Meanwhile, Benjamin crawls back into her life begging for another chance and hoping for forgiveness. When Tamara faces rejection and loses her job, she moves back home for a fresh start, seeking redemption. But, back home she meets Kameron- a professional basketball player whose spirit shines brighter than his career. After he enters her life, so does an opportunity to work for the NSA. Now standing at a fork in the road, Tamara must decide whether the path she is destined to travel consists of true love and success, or must Tamara choose between the two?
This novel kept me wanting to read more, wondering what was going to happen next! I know this book will minister to masses of broken women who need their hope reestablished in God's all-knowing ability and perfect plan for their lives! It has definitely "Awakened" me to truth, expectation and the infinite possibilities of our God!
QQ: So Kennisha, where did you get the inspiration to write Awakened?
KH: Awakened was originally going to be written about the love story of my husband and I. The original title was going to be Endless Letter. I thought our story was so unique, I wanted to get it on paper for our own private bookshelf. However, as I began writing it, I saw the Lord had a different plan for this book. It completely changed into a beautiful fiction story.
QQ: Did you pull from your personality for Tamara, the main character in Awakened?
KH: There are some similarities there (laughing). As her character was being developed, I intentionally made her a little bit more intense than I am. My reaction to some of the circumstances she went through would probably have been a little different. She's a tough cookie in there.
QQ: Awakened isn't just a typical story that talks about finding love. There are a lot of very important biblical principles inside. Was this the intent of the book?
KH: Yes! I place Awakened in the category of Fiction with Purpose. The purpose behind the book is to encourage single women who may feel hopeless because of their age and/or past relationships. I want them to know that love is not impossible and that if they trust God and wait patiently, He'll have someone come into their lives...and sometimes, when they least expect it.
QQ: Have you ever thought that Awakened could become a movie?
KH: (Laughing) That would certainly be amazing because the message would reach a larger audience that way. But yes, I would absolutely love that opportunity if God had it lined up for Awakened.
QQ: Awakened ends with Tamara making her decision, which is probably one that many won't expect she'll make. But, it leaves room for a sequel...Will you write a sequel to Awakened?
KH: Yes. I started working on it already! I'm thrilled to learn what the next book will hold for Tamara, Kameron and Benjamin. What a tangled web we weave!
